Humanists Australia welcomes new CEO, Dr Dave Scott
Dave joins Humanists Australia as our CEO after a long career in community and international development. He has considerable experience in substantive social reforms and holds a PhD in social science from the Queensland University of Technology. Dave is a rights-based advocate committed to leading inclusive and impactful social change
As a child, Dave (like many others) was exposed to the distress of religious institutional mistreatment. From these experiences, he sought a belief system that was not faith-based but could inspire him to overcome these challenges and lead a healthy life. As a young adult, Dave embraced scientific rationale and has identified as a Humanist ever since. He built a life and career based on the principles of inclusion, compassion, dignity and human rights.
“I find answers in scientific enquiry that places human well-being at the centre of rational thought, rather than divine or supernatural concepts.”
“In Australia, we are witnessing significant social change. The 2021 Census told us that the fastest growing religion is no religion (nearly 40 per cent), almost doubling across the previous decade. Modern Australians are seeking secular well-being and social support, secular ceremonies, secular entertainment, secular education, any number of social enterprises once dominated by religious groups. Religious violence, outdated views on gender equality, sexual diversity, climate and the environment, and the criminality of clergy and institutional responses to child sexual abuse. These issues weigh heavily on our social consciousness.”
“Responding ‘no religion’ to a Census question doesn’t mean that people are less moral or ethical than in previous surveys or generations. Quite the opposite. There is a deep, population-wide desire for greater transparency and accountability within our institutions. Moral aptitude is no longer broadly considered a by-product of theology. From ancient philosophers to modern theorists, Humanists maintain an ever-evolving moral and ethical worldview that promotes personal and social responsibility.”
“I am very excited to be taking on the role of CEO at Humanists Australia, and I am inspired by the history, wisdom and achievement that embodies our movement. I will draw upon this knowledge and enhance collaborations so that all Australians seeking a non-doctrinal life stance can find fulfilment, comfort, and community in Humanism. I look forward to working with the Humanists Australia Board, staff, members, volunteers and partners to deliver on our organisational values and strategic plan”.
