Climate advocacy: how you can take action!

The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report has delivered a ‘final warning’ for the climate crisis, to act now before it’s too late, with the window of opportunity to reduce emissions closing.

Recent exceptional events such as mega-bushfires, extensive and repetitive flooding, and violent storms, have already destroyed many Australians’ homes and livelihoods, resulted in deaths and homelessness and had a devastating effect on our unique wildlife and exceptional natural ecosystems and have been a huge cost to our economy.

The State of the Climate 2022 produced by the CSIRO and Bureau of Meteorology, clearly explains why this is happening and warns that global warming will continue to accelerate with even more catastrophes impacting our community, environment and economy. The last decade was the hottest on record and the summer of 2023 could be the hottest yet.

A survey conducted in 2022 by the Australia Institute showed that:
83% of Australians are concerned climate change will result in droughts and flooding affecting crop production and food supply and more bushfires;
79% of Australians support a phase out of coalfired power stations;
61% of Australians support a windfall profits tax on the oil and gas industry;
57% of Australians support stopping new coal, oil and gas projects, in line with the International Energy Agency pathway

Like many people in Australia, humanists are worried about the increase in human-induced global warming producing accelerated climate change that is already tearing the very fabric of our society. That is why, as part of our Climate Change and the Environment campaign, Humanists Australia has developed a practical tool for members and supporters alike to use to advocate for action!
