HA supports YES vote on Indigenous Voice Referendum

Position Statement:

Humanists Australia supports a YES vote on the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum, 2023

Australians have the opportunity now to enshrine an Indigenous Voice in Australia’s constitution. The Voice will provide advice to parliament and the executive government of the Commonwealth on issues affecting our First Nations peoples.

The proposed Indigenous voice is a practical and achievable solution that has been developed through extensive consultation with Indigenous peoples and communities. It is a collaborative effort between Indigenous leaders, experts, and communities, working together with the Australian government to achieve meaningful change.

We recognise that some Indigenous leaders have concerns about instituting Voice before Treaty and Truth. We respect their views, and understand that there are different reasons to vote NO.

We believe that a NO vote would be interpreted by many Australians to mean that there is no need for change. This could stall progress on reconciliation and Indigenous rights for decades.

We therefore urge our members, and all Australians who are committed to creating a more inclusive and equitable society, where Indigenous Australians have a genuine voice and a meaningful role in shaping their own future, to vote YES.
