Humanists and Connection to Country

Can a humanist identify at all with "a spiritual connection to country"? HA Acting Secretary Rod Bower thinks we can, and must do, if we are to build a meaningful connection with many Australians, and especially with First Nations People.

" I don't believe in spirits as a living, acting entity," says Rod, “but I do think being in a place, or ‘on country that you or your ancestors lived in and cared for can have a special significance in the human mind, and bring a sense of calm and of belonging.”

“I get that feeling in the small country town where my grandparents grew up", he says. "I accept that for many First Nation People that feeling is much deeper, and I think it's time non-FNP Australians paid that more respect."
